Arrive in Christchurch, New Zealand’s Garden City. Set on a massive alluvial plain with a mountain back drop, this very English City is entwined with beautiful gardens, oak lined parks and some remnants of old English stone architecture. There are plenty of interesting things to do and see around the city with the very modern Art Gallery, Botanical Gardens, Performing Arts, Craft Markets, Antartic Centre, Gondolas & day trips to the French village of Akaroa. A punt on the Avon is a must for the ultimate relaxing experience in the heart of the South Island Capital.
You will be met at the Christchurch Airport where we will transfer you to your accommodation in Christchurch. Relax for the rest of the day with your own free time in New Zealand’s Garden City. A golfing session can be arranged for today (own extra expense) if you wish. This will depend on your arrival time into Christchurch and how you are feeling at the time. Your guide will give you a tour through the City and highlight point of interest. Ask at reception about any shows or plays that are on this evening in the city. (This is at your own additional expense)
You will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Christchurch Railway Station to catch the Tranz-Alpine Train to Greymouth located on our beautiful wild West Coast.
Leaving from Christchurch, crossing the huge and fertile patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, the Tranz-Alpine winds its way over massive viaducts, through spectacular gorges and river valleys, before tracking across the country’s greatest mountain range, the Southern Alps. Following rivers and skirting lakes, it descends through lush rainforest to the Tasman Sea and the West Coast. You are now entering a region of ancient rainforests, dramatic landscapes and gold fields, greenstone/jade and rugged coastlines. The West Coast is a place founded on adventure, romance & intrigue. Most of the inspiring photographs used to market New Zealand are from this region. World wide, ‘Coasters’ have a reputation for their pioneering spirit and their friendliness having been built on a heritage of gold miners, bushmen and explorers. This afternoon, you will be escorted to the Greymouth Golf Club & Course for a round at your own leisure. This is a country club in a beautiful forest setting. Our guide will be with you at the golf course until you're ready to return to your accommodation & evening dinner.
We suggest a half day golfing and a half day scenic tour today. Your tour is flexible so you can decide depending on the weather and your energy level that day what you wish to do. Options are golfing, a rainforest walk or a jungle boat cruise. However you will decide- your whole party needs to do the same tour.
Otion One: Paparoa Limestone National Park
Enjoy a half day in the Paparoa Limestone National Park and see the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. An all inclusive nature scenic tour that visits the fascinating limestone formations of the Paparoa National Park. We travel from Greymouth north along the stunning Coast Road to Punakaiki, being the Maori word for “food basket” and the home of the fascinating Pancake Rocks. Watch out for the dolphins and other wildlife often seen here. As near as possible to high tide, take a stroll around the Pancake Rocks Walkway to see the unique rock structures layered here 30 million years ago. Look out also for the roaring Geysers that heave their way from the Ocean floor up out through the Rock Blowholes. Take time to view the award winning audio visual show at the Visitors Centre and to browse around some of New Zealand’s finest craft displays.
Take a short easy interpretative Rain Forest walk where you will learn about the ecology of NZ’s temperate flora and how the local Maori people gained their food and medicine from the forest. You can also spend time beach combing for NZ Jade. This wild landscape is the home of NZ’s Pounamu-the Jade/greenstone treasured by Maori people. Walk along a secluded beach beside the thundering Tasman Seasurf in a search for your own souvenir piece of this treasured gemstone. Or feel the spirit on a Myths and Legends Cavern Tour. Step into a forgotten world of caves misted with time and ancient Maori legends. You will be led through the mysterious regions between oral history and myth. Follow the footsteps of Maori warriors and the early European explorers as you learn about Maori underworld legends and explore this historic site. Note that some care is required as underfoot conditions are uneven.
Option Two: Jungle Boat Cruise
A relaxing cruise by Jungle Boat amongst the primeval giants of our rain forests. In the traditions of our early explorers by Jungle Boat we follow the route of ‘Te Ara Pounamu’-the greenstone pathway. This is part of the trail used by ancient Maori greenstone/Jade traders on their way to the West Coast Jade fields. Your spirit will lead you to your choice of waka (boat). For those individual spirits, paddle your own craft through the rainforest waterway with your guide.
This gentle flat water float trip through some of the World's most hauntingly beautiful rainforest scenery teaches you how we preserve the delicate balance between one of nature's oldest ecosystems and today’s modern use of this environment. Here you can experience absolute silence which is only broken by the occasional birdcall.
Touch the silence while drifting by this prehistoric world of huge podocarp rainforest trees with some of the area's bird life. The dark waters are are tinged with tannin from the rainforest floor giving you an eerie feeling of timelessness and spirituality. You will leave with a sense of rejuvenation from your visit with nature today. Enjoy a cup of Manuka Bush tea, glass of wine or fruit juice as you learn about the life and legends of the native Maori People and take home a piece of traditional flax weaving made during the flax weaving tuition our guide leads whilst on the cruise. We drift quietly down the river for about one and a half hour & you are offered a natural history, Maori and ecology interpretation. The whole trip from Greymouth return is about 3 hours/half day.
Today we travel south to Hokitika, the heart of the 1860's gold rush. Goldmines still operate in this area so there is an opportunity to see how this is done for those who are interested.
Depart for Hokitika Gold room, the home of unique West Coast goldfields jewellery. You will see some enormous eels at Westland’s Water World or perhaps spot a Kiwi, New Zealand’s National Bird, at the conservation breeding facility. This afternoon you play golf at the Goldfields Golf Course. The course is located right along the coast with some great views. There's also a tee here called the 'Sand Dunes Classic'. This is to practice your drive and makes a good fun competition as the fairway goes across a wide river and into the sand dunes. We will have some old golf balls for you to practice with here and a prize for the longest drive!
This morning, we have another round of golf at Greymouth Golf Club before travelling back to Christchurch over the Southern Alps via Otira Gorge and Arthur’s Pass. The stunning highway will give you a completely different view of the Alps compared to your trip on the Tranzalpine. We stop off in the Alpine village of Arthur’s Pass for some great photos and visit a sheep station with lunch on the way. If you wish, you can join in some farm activities or watch the farmer and his amazing dogs round up the sheep for you to meet! Your tour finishes on arrival in Christchurch.
Note that accommodation tonight is not included in this tour. We can arrange this for a small extra fee if you so wish. Your guide will drop you at your nominated hotel or we will transfer you to the airport for your flight home.
Note: This fully escorted package golf tour starts and finishes in Christchurch. It includes 3 visits to golf courses on the West Coast of the South Island plus some sightseeing & adventure activities. Extra golfing sessions can be arranged during the tour at an additional cost if desired. It is an all inclusive tour and is very flexible allowing for activity choices during the tour. If you have a group, you can even split to do different activities at the same time.
